Greenland belongs to the Greenlandic people

24.2.2026 Yleinen

The Nordic Green Left expresses our clear and unwavering support for Greenland’s right to full self-determination. Greenland belongs to the Greenlandic people — not to superpowers, market interests, or historical power structures. It is a fundamental democratic and anti-colonial principle that every people has the right to determine their own political, economic, and social future.

At a time when the Arctic is increasingly becoming the subject of geopolitical rivalry, resource interests, and military strategy, it is crucial that the principle of self-determination is not undermined by superpower politics or economic pressure. History has all too often shown how strategic territories have been treated as pawns in a global power game. This development must be clearly rejected.

This is not about territorial claims or national prestige. It is about justice, democracy, and decolonization. Whether it concerns relations with Denmark or other countries, future independence, or other political choices, the decisions must be made by the Greenlandic people themselves—free from external pressure.

Since Trump began his second term as President of the United States, he has expressed with increasing intensity his expansionist demands that Greenland should belong to the United States. Although threats to use military force to achieve these demands have subsided, at least temporarily, the threat to Greenland’s self-determination is not over.

The Nordic Green Left views with concern how Trump’s recurring strategic and economic ambitions in the region are expressed in the form of blackmail and without any respect for Greenland’s right to self-determination. No state has the right to buy, pressure, or otherwise seize control of a people or its territory.

The international community—not least the Nordic countries—has a responsibility to clearly defend international law, oppose all forms of neo-colonial influence, and actively support Greenland’s right to shape its own future. It is our responsibility to ensure that democracy and self-determination take precedence over power politics and economic interests.
